-Four Fundamental Questions of Tantra Yoga

A Brief History

Yoga has existed for thousands of years in India. The earliest writings about yoga are the Vedas, ancient Sanskrit texts describing rituals and chanted hymns of devotion.

In recent years, our Western society has embraced yoga and all its practices, philosophies, and ethical principles.

Yoga made its way West as early as the mid-1800’s, when the great Swami Vivekananda brought his system of Raja Yoga to the United States. Raja yoga was based on an eightfold path of yogic teachings set forth in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. The Sutras are succinct sayings about yoga written 500-200 B.C. They describe mental processes used to achieve clarity and connection with the Divine.

The Hatha Yoga Pradipika of Swatmarama, which came later, describes the technique of asana (postures) practice.

Over time, yoga has branched off into a multitude of schools, making it a very rich and complex tradition with many different approaches and techniques. Breathe Yoga Studio honors, respects and embraces all yoga.
